Those four numbers are the reliable part of the result. How it works

The tool downloads a face landmark model to your device the first time you use it, locates 478 points on the face, and derives a handful of anatomically conventional measurements from them: the trichion-to-menton face length, the bizygomatic (cheekbone) width, the forehead width and the bigonial (jaw) width. Four ratios are computed from those numbers, and the ratios — not the raw pixels — decide the shape.

Because the classification is ratio-based, it is independent of how close you are to the camera and of the resolution of the photo. It is not independent of head angle, so the tool checks your head pose first and tells you to retake the photo when it is too far off-axis.

The six face shapes

Oval face shape

Face length ≈ 1.5 × cheekbone width · cheekbones are the widest point · forehead slightly wider than a gently tapered jaw.

The balanced reference shape: slightly longer than wide, cheekbones the widest point, and a jawline that curves rather than angles.

Round face shape

Face length ≈ width (ratio near 1.0–1.25) · forehead, cheekbones and jaw all about the same width · the jawline has no hard corner.

Roughly as wide as it is long, with full cheeks and a soft, rounded jawline — curves everywhere and no hard angles.

Square face shape

Face length ≈ width · forehead, cheekbones and jaw within a few percent of each other · a hard angle at the jaw and often a straight hairline.

Compact proportions like round, but with a defined jaw corner and minimal taper — forehead, cheekbones and jaw are all about the same width.

Heart face shape

Forehead wider than cheekbones, cheekbones wider than jaw · a sharp chin point · F > C > J in the three width measurements.

The forehead is the widest point of the face, tapering through high cheekbones to a narrow, often pointed chin.

Oblong face shape

Face length ÷ width is above about 1.6, with the forehead, cheekbones and jaw at similar widths and minimal tapering.

Clearly longer than wide with fairly parallel sides — the forehead, cheekbones and jaw are all at similar widths, just stretched vertically.

Diamond face shape

Cheekbones wider than both the forehead and the jaw · forehead and jaw are of similar, smaller width · C > F and C > J.

The cheekbones are the widest point, with the face narrowing towards both a narrower forehead and a narrower jaw — a double taper.

Getting a usable photo

What this tool cannot tell you

Your hairline is not a facial landmark — the model estimates the top of your forehead, so if your hair covers it, the face length will read short and you may be pushed towards round or square. Beards thicken the visual jaw, glasses and hair can hide the cheekbones, and body fat changes the soft tissue outline over time. At borderline ratios two shapes fit equally well, which is why the runner-up is always shown.

This is a styling reference, not a medical, diagnostic or attractiveness assessment. Face shape is a description of proportions, not a verdict.

FAQ

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The image is decoded, measured and discarded entirely inside your browser. There is no upload endpoint in this tool, and the face landmark model is downloaded to your device rather than your photo being sent to it. You can verify this yourself in your browser’s Network tab: after the model has loaded once, analysing a photo makes no requests at all.

How accurate is the face shape result?

It is a geometric estimate, not a measurement by a professional. We locate facial landmarks and compute four ratios (face length to cheekbone width, forehead width to jaw width, cheekbone width to jaw width, and forehead width to cheekbone width), then pick the closest conventional category. Hair covering your forehead, a tilted head, a beard, or a wide-angle selfie can all shift the result. The measurements are the reliable part; the category is a convention, so always look at the runner-up too.

What photo should I use?

A front-facing photo, taken at arm’s length rather than up close, with your hair pulled back off your temples and forehead, a neutral expression, and the camera at eye height. That gives the cleanest landmark detection.

Can I use this on my phone?

Yes. The tool works in any modern mobile browser. The first analysis downloads the landmark model (a few megabytes), which is then cached, so later runs are fast and the tool keeps working offline.

What are the six face shapes?

Oval, round, square, heart, oblong and diamond. They are defined by two things: the ratio of face length to the widest point (usually the cheekbones), and where the face is widest relative to the forehead and jaw.

Is face shape the same as attractiveness?

No, and this tool deliberately does not score attractiveness. Face shape describes bone-structure proportions. It is useful for choosing hairstyles, glasses and beard shapes — not for judging how someone looks.
